"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it."

…Gov. George W. Bush

EF MANDATE

The Environmental Forum's spheres of concern are wide-ranging:
  1. Spreading environmental awareness in the Labour Movement, particularly the fact that green development means good jobs in virtually every sector of the economy.
  2. Creating political pressure on government to ratify and implement the Kyoto Accord.
  3. Generating practical development projects, partnerships and strategies in green manufacturing, affordable housing, sustainable transportation, holistic health care, etc.

WHAT IS THE ENVIRONMENTAL FORUM?

The Environmental Forum is the nexus of the Green Labour movement in the Toronto-area. Formed by the Labour Council in the spring of 2002 to highlight the job-creation potential of the Kyoto accord on climate change, the Forum is a resource for green activism by Council-affiliated unions. A catalyst for both education and practical action, the Forum firmly believes that ecological development is the key to job creation, real prosperity and healthier communities for everyone.

IMPLEMENTING THE KYOTO ACCORD WILL MEAN:

  • A cumulative net economic savings of $4 billion across the economy reaching $1.6 billion per year, or $47 per capita, in 2012.
  • The net addition of 52,000 jobs in the economy generally, due to the redirection of consumer spending away from fuel and electricity and toward other goods, services, activities and investments;
  • A $135 average annual gain in household wages and salaries, and a $2 billion increase in the national GDP beyond that projected in the business-as-usual scenario.

YOU CAN HELP CREATE EXCITING GREEN JOBS FOR YOUR UNION IN YOUR INDUSTRY

The Environmental Forum is charting greenprints for a sustainable future in every sector of the economy. The essence of green production is to replace materials and energy with creative human work. The EF needs workers from every union to be part of this process of creating a vision and initiating projects to actualize the vision. What would a green economy look like in your profession and your community? Join the Environmental Forum to find out.

"Rebuilding our economy into a sustainable one can create jobs - in every sector. From resource extraction to public transit. From redesigning industrial processes that 'close the loop' to different crops and food production. From water treatment to demand side management for electricity. The list goes on and on."
