For Immediate Release November 22, 2002 Toronto-Today is National Housing Day. In communities across Canada, events are being organized to bring attention to the shame of homelessness and the need for a comprehensive national housing program. I hope you will take a few moments to visit the display in the rotunda - the Four Seasons photo exhibit sponsored by CAW Local 112. It was created by Chris Bognat, a CAW member who spent a year capturing images of the homeless crisis in our city. The photos are both beautiful and haunting. Enclosed you will find the newly published book based on those photos. It is a product of a collaboration between the Toronto & York Region Labour Council, CAW Local 112, and the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee. We have funded this effort in order to widen the understanding of housing as a basic human right. The book is addressed to those who have decent jobs and a roof over their head - and a reminder that no-one is exempt from the possibility of finding themselves in need. The Toronto & York Region Labour Council is committed to making housing issues and homelessness a priority at all levels of government. I trust that you share that same commitment, and together we can start finding solutions for this very real crisis that exists in our backyard and society more broadly. Sincerely, John Cartwright President Media Contacts: Patty C. Barrera, Toronto & York Region Labour Council 416.571.2139 Musonda Kidd, TO Disaster Relief Committee 416.599.8372 OPEIU343 |
