FLAG RAISING AT CITY HALL

We started off the day with Mayor John Tory delivering the official City of Toronto proclamation and raising our 150th Anniversary flag at City Hall. A number of other cities in York Region also issued proclamations.

WEBSITE LAUNCH

The Anniversary website www.Labour150.ca is now live, featuring a range of stories, videos, pics and histories of local unions. Curious about when the first women became Delegates to Labour Council? Want to find out about the Toronto roots of Labour Day, or labour’s anti-racist campaigns in the 1940’s? Check out the timeline, the stories, and the contests. If you want to share the funniest version of “What Have Unions Ever Done for Us?” check out our featured videos.

FIND OUR ADS ACROSS TORONTO & YORK REGION

Our ads are now in buses and on bus shelters across Toronto, and on billboards in York Region. For a century and a half working people have organized collectively here for economic and social justice. That epic journey will be celebrated over the coming months as we share the stories of those who came before us, and the lessons of solidarity that guide our movement today.

OUR SHARED HISTORY

From personal accounts and letters to video documentaries; from songs to photo exhibits; from wall murals to podcasts… we will explore a variety of ways to bring labour’s rich and diverse history to the people of this region.  And it’s not just about history. In this Op-Ed Labour Council President John Cartwright explains how the lessons of this 150 year journey can apply to our challenges today.

Labour Council is deeply grateful for the efforts of the 150th Anniversary Steering Committee – Maureen King, Craig Heron, Frank Saptel, Susan McMurray, Richelle Himaya, Mohammad Aumeer and Simon Sung; and for the input of dozens of labour activists and retirees who have served as the 150th Advisory Group. You can find Craig Heron’s brilliant tale “The Workers’ City” published for the anniversary.
