The Toronto and York Region Labour Council's Equity Committee condemns the recent act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in Orlando, Florida.
This committee further condemns all acts of gun violence and all other forms of violence against anyone based on race, colour, creed, religion, gender, age, body type, marital status, family status or sexual orientation in Toronto and around the world.
Whether the issue is manifested in the form of the direct violence seen recently in Orlando, Florida or the issue is the denial of the choice of bathrooms for the trans-gender members of the community, this committee sees both as forms of violence that serve to promote fear, division and oppression within the LGBTQ+ community and workforce.
As such the Toronto and York Region Labour Council's Equity Committee stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ workers and other community members in a collective struggle towards a society where every life matters and is respected. The Executive Board of the Labour Council is in complete support of this statement.
The Toronto and York Region Labour Council is a central labour body that combines the strength of hundreds of local unions representing 205,000 working women, men and their families.
