Fight Back Against the Right-Wing Attack
Our unions are under attack – and the right wing is preparing their next assault. As life for working people has become harder, more are coming to realize just how important their unions are. But, there are plans to weaken yours, and every union in Canada. Our unions are the best tool we have to build the life we deserve.
Poilievre’s Plan Follows Ford’s Footsteps
A career politician, Poilievre’s extreme policies would:
- Weaken union bargaining power in negotiations with your employer
- Cut wages, benefits, and pensions of both union and non-union workers
- Reduce workplace safety and union representation
- Cut good jobs for the next generation
- Weaken defence of public services, human rights, and the environment
In Ontario, Ford has attacked working people since 2018:
- Slashed labour laws, lowering the floor and weakening collective bargaining
- Froze the minimum wage, cutting wages for thousands of workers
- Started privatizing our healthcare and education
- Ripped up the constitution by trying to force education worker’s back to work
Big business and their allies on the right are only concerned about one thing: their profits. Now, to increase those profits, they are turning to their friends in government to stack the rules in their favour.
Push Back with Union Solidarity
Affiliates will need to make a serious commitment to engaging their members actively and regularly on this issue, to have difficult political conversations, and show them the dire threat posed by the right. This fight cannot, and will not be won by passive engagement alone. There is no room for hesitation, and we must use every tool in our toolbox: lunch room meetings, workshops, home visits, one-on-one conversations, mailouts, and more.
Countering the far-right must become a centre piece of every union’s regular business.
