For the third time in two years, WSIB is gifting big businesses billions of dollars while injured workers struggle to make ends meet.
Since 2024, under Minister of Labour David Piccini’s watch, WSIB has claimed billions of dollars in surpluses. These surpluses are a lie – they have been generated by the chronic undercompensating of injured workers.
These ‘surpluses,’ totalling $6 billion, have then been handed over to big businesses as rebates to ‘safe’ workplaces in Ontario. The criteria for being considered a ‘safe’ workplace? No workplace fatalities in the last year. Interestingly, there is no publicly accessible list of rebate recipients.
WSIB is stealing out of the pockets of injured workers, leaving workers who are injured on the job having to turn to OW and ODSP to put food on their table and roofs over their heads. In Ontario, taxpayers have to shoulder the burden of unsafe workplaces while employers get to pay less and less toward WSIB. In Minister Piccini and Premier Doug Ford’s Ontario, big businesses get hand outs and workers get shafted.
Injured workers and their allies are rallying for urgent WSIB reform – an end to deeming and claim suppression, a continuation of WSIB benefits past age 65, justice for migrant workers and status for all.
