The Director, Operations & Strategy serves as a pivotal administrative leader, responsible for both high-level decision-making and hands-on operational activities. The position requires an active commitment to the labour movement and social justice, and dedication to supporting the Toronto & York Region Labour Council’s mission through operations oversight, strategic planning and direct involvement in key actions and campaigns. Reporting to the full-time President (or designate), the Director will provide essential management and leadership to ensure the smooth functioning of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council’s office. This support enables the President and Officers to concentrate on their core duties and empowers staff members to optimize their work and roles.
As a member of a small, interdependent staff team, the Director, Operations & Strategy, among other roles, actively participates in effective team-building efforts. The position involves providing hands-on support for a range of organizational activities and routine tasks. Additionally, the Director will play a key role in actions and campaigns, including but not limited to elections, strikes, and political bargaining.
This role requires a combination of strong organizational and hands-on administrative skills. It requires skills, experience, initiative, and stamina. The ideal candidate is passionate about making a difference and thrives in dynamic, collaborative environments.

You are successful when you:
- Lead high-level decision making and hands-on operational activities
- Serve as liaison between the President, Officers and Staff
- Plan and manage internal operations, administration, staff, finance, and IT coordination
- Support and supervise a small, highly skilled, dedicated, unionized staff team, currently: Executive Assistant, Organizer, Communications & Data Coordinator, and Administrative Assistant
- Oversee service providers and ensure high service standards
- Actively contribute to team building and work closely with the President, Officers and Staff to develop and maintain collaborative, high trust relationships, and support organizational events and daily operational needs
- Leads files including major activities and projects.
What you bring to the role:
A post-secondary diploma in Non-Profit Management, Business Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience. Additionally, a minimum of five years of progressive experience in operations, administration, or strategy in a fast-paced environment, preferably working in a unionized environment, experience supporting senior leaders and/or volunteer Boards/Committees and managing staff.
You must have:
- Experience in operations, administration, and strategic planning
- Leadership skills including excellent communication and team-building skills, internally and externally
- Detail-oriented, organized, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
- Proficient with unionized staff supervision, finance and IT coordination
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach, effectively working as part of a staff team that values and leverages the expertise of existing team members and roles. Fosters an inclusive environment that encourages input and engagement from all team members
- Commitment to solidarity and understanding of the role of unions in social and economic justice is required, and has political acuity
- Ability to work evenings and weekends when required.
