Ausma Malik has spent her life building a better city and more caring, connected communities.
As the local councillor for Spadina-Fort York since 2022, Ausma has worked with community members, City staff, and stakeholders to advance city-wide affordable housing, build vibrant public spaces, improve public transit, and make streets safer for everyone.
Since 2023, as a member of the leadership team at City Hall with Mayor Olivia Chow, Ausma has served as first Deputy Mayor and advanced community and city interests on 16 boards and committees. Together, they’ve made major investments in affordable and rental housing, opened libraries 7-days-a-week, expanded student nutrition programs to every school in Toronto, and secured the next phase of waterfront revitalization, including the long-awaited Waterfront East transit line.
The first hijab-wearing Muslim woman elected to public office in Canada, Ausma served downtown communities as a public school board trustee (2014-2018) and worked to advance social justice, decent work, and a fair economy as the Director of Advocacy and Organizing at the Atkinson Foundation (2016-2022).
From student organizing to environmental activism, from child care advocacy and education accessibility to policy innovation that improves lives, she has experienced first-hand the power of working together. As the child of immigrants, Ausma believes in a Toronto that works for all of us, includes all of us and gives voice to all of us.
Ausma will keep working for an affordable, caring and safe city where we have everything that we need to thrive.
