The Toronto & York Region Labour Council is hiring a permanent full-time Organizer to expand our organizing capacity across Toronto and York Region.
We bring unions together to build working-class power and advance economic, social, racial and climate justice. We are looking for an experienced organizer who can build affiliate relationships, develop people who organize others, and turn political and campaign goals into action.
Reporting to the Assistant to the President or designate, this outward-facing role leads affiliate development and campaign organizing and contributes to political action, mobilization, leadership development and field activity. The work includes one-on-one organizing, affiliate meetings, campaigns, phonebanks, picket lines, coalitions, events and disciplined follow-up.

Founded in 1871, the Toronto & York Region Labour Council is a central labour body representing unions and workers across Toronto and York Region. We work with affiliates and community partners to strengthen unions, defend good jobs and public services, build political power, deepen equity and solidarity, develop labour leadership and advance climate justice.

You are successful when you:
- Build and grow affiliate relationships. Develop substantive relationships with affiliates and prospects, learn their priorities, make the case for participation and help affiliates become active in campaigns, political work and the broader organization.
- Develop people who can organize others. Use one-on-ones, clear asks and follow-up to develop activists and member leaders, increase responsibility and build teams that recruit and organize others.
- Build mobilization capacity. Ensure workers and activists can be reached and organized quickly for collective action.
- Plan, deliver and learn from campaigns. Set clear objectives and targets, map people and power, coordinate activity, review results and adjust tactics.
- Support unions in struggle. Help affiliates during strikes, bargaining and workplace campaigns through mobilization, activist communications, coalition-building and turnout.
- Advance Labour Council’s political work. Support year-round municipal, provincial and federal political action, including elections, volunteer mobilization and engagement with elected officials.
- Strengthen our work in York Region. Build relationships with affiliates, activists and community and political partners across the region.
- Support campaigns, committees and worker networks. Help Labour Council committees, worker networks, affiliates and community partners organize effective activities and plans.
- Use digital tools as organizing tools. Use calling/SMS, forms and the CRM to record assessments and commitments, prioritize follow-up, identify leaders and track deeper participation.
- Contribute to an interdependent staff team and advance solidarity, equity, anti-racism and social, economic and climate justice through the work.
What you bring to the role
The successful candidate will have:
- At least five years of relevant union, political, electoral, workplace or community organizing experience.
- Knowledge of the labour movement and the role unions and labour councils play in building working-class power.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships, conduct effective one-on-ones and develop volunteers, activists or member leaders.
- Experience developing and implementing campaigns or political programs, from strategy through hands-on organizing.
- Sound political judgement, initiative and accountability while working with limited supervision and competing priorities.
- Clear written and oral communication and effective project and time-management skills.
- Comfort with CRMs, digital organizing tools and shared office/collaboration software, or the ability to learn them quickly.
- A commitment to equity, anti-racism, leadership development among diverse and equity-deserving workers, and collaborative small-team work.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends when required and travel reliably throughout Toronto and York Region; a valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle are strongly preferred.
Knowledge of Toronto and York Region politics, electoral or municipal organizing experience, and a second language are assets.
Equivalent combinations of education, labour movement and relevant on-the-job experience will be considered.

- Starting salary: $90,835.16 annually, plus a generous benefits package
- Bargaining unit: United Steelworkers Local 3950
Generally Monday to Friday, with evening and weekend flexibility for campaigns, meetings, picket lines and events.
